VOICE – OVER TRAINING CLASSES (held - at North Seattle Recording Studio)

  • Intro to Voice-Over – 6 Wednesday nights - Scott Burns, instructor
    • Do people tell you “your voice should be on the radio?” Do you often wonder if you have what it takes? Where do you start and who do you trust? Come to a professional audio studio with an engineer and explore all phases of voice-over. Be introduced to the mechanics of various types of voiceovers: Radio, TV, Corporate Videos, Narration and Video Games. Experience analyzing copy, taking direction, voice-acting and communicating instead of just reading the script, and finding authority and sincerity – even if you really don’t believe it! Learn the true reality of this business. With this introductory class, you can explore the world of voice-over and find out if you have an aptitude for it.
  • Advanced Voice-Over Fitness – ONE SATURDAY - Scott Burns, instructor, Debbe Hirata, Special Guest
    • In this premiere ONE DAY workshop, two seasoned veterans of voice-over will be challenging students to "get into fitness form" by sharpening their voice acting chops and choices in the recording studio. Scott Burns will teach and direct solo for the first three hours, preparing students by doing "cold reads." Scott presents, practices, and trains students with the "5 Questions to Ask Yourself BEFORE Stepping in Front of the Microphone."

Scott has invited Special Guest VO Artist, Debbe Hirata, to participate in his afternoon "mock audition" session . Performances will be raised a notch as Debbe steps into her directing shoes. From her experience as an advertising creative director, copy writer, producer, sales executive and seasoned voice talent you'll be challenged in new ways to go within and discover your winning read. Debbe will help you find your own personal "brand," learn how to listen to what the copy is "saying," and let go of fear that may be holding you back. She'll give you a true, real world picture of what it's like in today's market to successfully compete and book the job as you hone your skills of internal SELF DIRECTION. You'll get insights into how the people who do the hiring think and most importantly, be asked to "think like an advertiser" yourself.

Together, the Scott and Debbe team will exercise your vocal approaches for an intense but fun workout! This workshop is the "next step" toward the auditioning process, preparing for your demo, and launching you as a "professional voice-over artist."

Prerequisite: Scott Burns' "Intro to Voice-Over" workshop or previous voice-over training and/or experience or recommendation from an industry professional.
  • VOICE Lab Workout – 4 Wednesday nights - Scott Burns, instructor, director, engineer
    • BY INVITATION ONLY.
PRACTICE! PRACTICE!! & MORE PRACTICE in preparation for your demo!!! That is what this workshop is about. With limited enrollment, each student will have more time at the microphone with direct one-on-one coaching, recording, and LISTENING to playback with a critical ear. Now you will be working harder than ever with copious amounts of copy. Learn how to analyze bad copy, stretch your acting skills, have fun and let go with your creative juices. During the process, discover how the use of sound and music can help jump-start a character.

In preparation for your demo production, this workshop will help you absorb the total studio experience from audition to session. Your demo might get you hired, but your performance at the session might not get you hired back. Learn to convey emotion in creating the character, since the message rides upon the emotions. This workshop will enhance your voice reads so you may have a bright future in being cast and work in the Voice-Over industry.

Pre-requisite: Recommendation by Scott and Barbara or by another industry professional.
